VLA Purpose
The Veterinary Laboratory Association® (VLA) is an organization for persons interested in the field of veterinary laboratory medicine. This association was formed for the purpose of providing consistency throughout veterinary diagnostic laboratories, which ultimately improves animal welfare. The association does not limit membership to any geographical area nor denote that this association is specific for any type of laboratory; commercial, federal, state, university, or other private ownership. The association was formed in Chicago, Illinois on February 10th and 11th, 1989.
The purpose of the association is as follows:
- To promote good laboratory practices in the areas of Chemistry/Toxicology, Hematology, Serology/Immunology, Urinalysis, Bacteriology, Histopathology, Cytology, Therapeutic drug monitoring, Endocrinology, Parasitology and other areas as they apply to the field of veterinary medicine.
- To provide quality assurance programs for the use in performance testing of participating laboratories in the field of veterinary medicine.
- To provide continuing education and disseminate information in the field of diagnostic laboratory medicine.
- To cooperate with other professions, industries, and organizations while refraining from promotion of any one segment, professional or otherwise, to the detriment of others.
Membership is open to anyone interested in the field of veterinary laboratory medicine, to include technicians, technologists, veterinarians, veterinary pathologists, laboratory managers and directors, professional organizations and industry.
